Is It Better to Renovate Your Current Space or Add On to Your Home?
If you’re thinking about making some changes to your home in order to better fit with your current needs, you may be considering whether or not you should simply convert the room(s) in your current floorplan, or instead add on and ultimately increase your home’s overall square footage.
Renovate or Add On
The short answer to this question is – it depends. In fact, there are actually several questions you need to ask yourself before you move forward with either of these options, such as:
- Is the number of occupants in your household increasing or decreasing? In this case, if your family is still growing, you may want to add on (as versus updating your current space). This is particularly true if you love your home’s location and school district.
- How has (or how will) your lifestyle be changing in the near future? Your current and future lifestyle can also factor into the decision. Here, for instance, if you plan to work from home, it may make more sense to convert a current space into a home office.
- What is your budget for the project? Your budget can oftentimes dictate which direction your go. Typically, putting an addition on your home is more costly. Doing so can also require you to obtain the proper permits that you need before you move forward. On the other hand, though, increasing the size of your home may also increase the value – so going with an add-on could still be well worth the price.
