What Not to Do When Renovating a Home

Renovating your home can be a great way to customize and make it more your own.  But there are some obstacles to look out for that could end up costing you in time, money, or both. So, it is important that you follow some tips on what not to do so you can keep the project on track.

These no-no’s include:

  1. Setting a budget that is unrealistic. It is not uncommon for home renovations to go over their original estimated price. With that in mind, it is recommended that you build an additional 20% into your overall project cost.
  2. Not keeping true to the original architectural style. Even though your renovations do not have to match the exact same structure, it is important that they compliment the original architectural style of your home. Otherwise, the work may appear out of place.
  3. Purchasing décor and furniture “too early.” While you may be excited to get the finishing touches lined up, buying furniture and home décor too early in the project timeline can be a mistake. By waiting, you can better ensure that measurements and placements will be more accurate.
  4. Opting for cheap materials. Even though it may be tempting to cut corners on price, do not purchase cheap materials. Instead, go with durable and high-quality materials. If you get low quality items, you may find yourself re-renovating again in the near future.
