Where to Begin with Your Home Renovation Project
Home renovation can be a major undertaking. Depending on the extent of your remodel, there can be many “moving parts” to contend with. So, just like any other big endeavor, it can help to have a step-by-step plan in place so that you know where to begin, and to ensure that everything is on the right track.
Step 1: Planning / Budgeting
The first step is to come up with a plan that outlines the work you want done. In this phase, you should also create a budget so that you know what to anticipate in terms of costs, as well as the maximum dollar figure you can spend. It is recommended that you build in a “cushion” so that you can cover unexpected expenses, such as mold removal and/or a required upgrade to your electrical system. If it appears that you might go over budget, it may be necessary to put some of the renovation items on hold.
Step 2: Hiring a Contractor
Bringing the right contractor or team on board can make a tremendous difference in the outcome of your home renovation. It is recommended that you research several potential options before you commit to hiring one. Make sure that you review the contractors’ reputation, as well as some of their previous work.
Step 3: Demolition
If you are doing a full upgrade in the kitchen and/or bathroom(s), the contractor will have to clear out the old items, such as the sink(s), shower, appliances, counter(s), and cabinets.
Step 4: Framing and Painting
Next, the contractor will frame in any new walls that are necessary. Once the drywall is smooth, it can be painted. You may be able to save some money by painting the room(s) yourself. But this can be time-consuming and strenuous.
